Your living room is one of the most lived in areas of your house. Some of us like to move furniture around to give the living room a new look now and then. Besides the simple task of moving furniture around, here are some simple ways you can update the look of your living room.

Wallpaper your living room. New wallpaper can give your room an instant facelift. You can opt to do one, two, three or all walls for a fresh update. If you plan on doing all four walls, then pick a soft color so that your room will look airy and spacious.

Add color with accessories. For a different look, play with textures and patterns. This can be new cushions for your sofa, a lampshade in a complementing color, an interesting vase on your mantle, or soft dramatic drapes. You could also place decorative items on your coffee table or your sideboard if you have one. One easy way to add to a room is to put up a painting or a picture on one of your walls. Instant facelift!

Another great idea is to display what you have. A freestanding shelf unit is no longer only used to keep books. It’s also great to display your family photographs, ornaments, vases and other knickknacks. Get a shelf with some drawers so that you can choose what items to display and what to hide from view. Isn’t this a grand way to highlight all those photos of your children and loved ones?

You can tie up the look of your living room by using the same wallpaper on your furniture and as soft furnishings. Some furniture can be wallpapered like the inside of a bookcase or a small tabletop. If you have vintage furniture, this technique can give it a fresh new look. This also works on whatever bargain items that you may have purchased for your living room, for example hatboxes or storage trunks. Once they get a new coat of paint and wallpaper, they’ll mesh well with the rest of your living room.

These simple ideas can help transform your living room. Now your living room looks new and expensive without it having to be so.

A candle just isn’t a candle without a wick.  Without a wick there would be nothing to light!  Instead of producing a beautiful glittering light, it would just be a beautiful piece of wax!  You may not have given wicks much thought but they are an important part of candle making.

Choosing a candle making wick is not something you should take lightly.  Actually, the more experienced you become at candle making the more involved you will become in choosing the right wick for your project.

Selecting a wick involves some key variables.  These include the type of wax you are going to use, the size of the candle you will be making, the fragrance density and your personal preferences.

Don’t let this intimidate you.  Choosing candle making wicks is not difficult at all.  As with anything you try for the first time, there will be challenges. However, once you do it a few times it will become very easy.

I am a strong proponent of note taking.  Write everything down for future reference.  Keep track of wick size, wax type, the pour temperature, the fragrance type used and with what type of wicks.  This way you will know what works well and what doesn’t the next time you do the same or a similar project.

Although you may be interested in learning about the science of wicks, how and why they work, that is not necessary for now.  The biggest thing to remember is that the diameter of the wick is important.

If you select a candle making wick that is too thick for your size candle, the result is a flame that burns too brightly. That, in turn, means your candle burns far too quickly. Not only is this not an efficient use of your candle, it’s also a hazard.

If you choose a wick that’s too thin the opposite occurs. The candle burns too slowly and only the inner portion of your candle melts. The wax, in effect, saturates the wick and all burning stops.

Typically, you’ll discover that candle making wicks are sold braided. This isn’t for a nice look. Braided wicks, for one thing, helps to indicate the thickness of the wick itself. The more braids a wick possesses, the thicker it is.

Candle making wicks are not to be overlooked.  Although selecting the right one is important, do not let it scare you.  The more you do it the better you will get.  You now have enough information to get started and be on your way to making your own beautiful candles.

The history of soap making began when the earliest recorded evidence of soap-like materials traced back to approximately 2800 BC, found in clay cylinders during the excavation of ancient Babylon.   Approximately 2200 BC, soap formula inscriptions were written on the clay saying that fats were boiled with ashes, which are a way of making soap, but there was no reference to the purpose of the soap.

Approximately 1500 BC, ancient Egyptians used animal and vegetable oils, combined with alkaline salts to create a soap-like-substance used for treating skin diseases as well as for washing.

Around 600 BC the Phoenicians used soap for cleaning wool, cotton and textiles prior to weaving and dieing, instead of for human washing.

The early Greeks did not use soap. They washed themselves with blocks of clay, pumice, sand and ashes then anointed they with oil.  Afterwards, they scraped sweat and dirt off using a curved bladed metal instrument called a strigil.  Much later, in the second century AD, the famous Greek physician, Galen, recommended washing with soap as a preventative measure for certain diseases, especially diseases of the skin.

Bathing became popular in the Roman times. An entire soap factory was discovered in the ruins of Pompeii in 79 AD.  The Romans exfoliated using abrasive substances like sand and pumice then scraped off the grime and dirt with sticks or a strigil.  Luxurious scented baths and massages followed this exfoliation ritual, with perfumed oils.

By the 13th century when the soap industry was introduced from Italy into France, most soap was produced from the tallow of goats, with beech ash furnishing the alkali.

Moving forward in time, Great Grandma rendered animal fats to get oils, so she was limited to tallow or lard. We have all kinds of terrific oils to choose from, but the lard with some olive oil and coconut oil makes wonderful, basic, castile-type soap. Great Grandma, also, had to make her own lye; we have standardized lye available, commercially.

After researching the science facts; chemical qualities of different oils, the active properties of botanicals, the results of saponification and the physical properties of lather and bubbles, the result produced a mild and gentle, homemade, natural soap.  This homemade soap is called goats milk soap.

Goats milk soap offers many skin care benefits, unlike commercial modern day soaps.  It contains mild and gentle, natural, ingredients, unlike harsh “chemically manufactured” ingredients or detergents in modern day soaps.  Goats milk soap leaves your skin close to its natural pH level, unlike harsh detergent type of soaps.  Goats milk soap contains the benefits of vitamins A,B, C, D, E and K. Handmade soap experts confirm that goat milk is the ingredient that makes the difference between regular handmade soap and a miraculous luxury item!

Ingredients can be added to goats milk soap, such as oatmeal or aloe vera juice, to help contribute to their soothing properties. This homemade soap is great for all kinds of skin types including:  dry itchy skin, dry flaky skin, oily skin, acne and sensitive skin. Harsh commercial soaps can, actually, contribute to poor skin conditions.  Oil production, on the face, is often the skin’s natural reaction against harsh chemicals in commercial soaps.  Mild and gentle, healthful, goats milk soaps gently cleanses, softens, soothes, moisturizes and nourishes skin.

Learn from the history of soap.  Get back to nature using homemade skin care products such as, natural goats milk soaps.  You can have beautiful, healthful, skin the way nature intended.

The “Smart-ologic Corian® Living” exhibition gave me the opportunity to develop a modular holistic house – a house that can be produced with minimal concave and convex panels and simple tooling. I have always been interested in this notion of a modular house, of efficient dwelling that can be erected simply and quickly, that can be inexpensive and democratic, and customizable with little cause and great effect. I always believed that architecture finally comes down to a system of components, but what we need are industrial elements that are more free form and flexible in their configuration as not to end up in the world of a grid. My other concern was to create these panels with less waste and to have the waste reused.

I wanted create a really positive, interesting, and artistic space for living that echoes the digital technorganic world we live in. “Smart-ologic Corian® Living” also gave me a venue to design interior objects in DuPont™ Corian® advanced surface – using also the versions from the 2010 collections Eco-Concrete ed Eco-Terrazzo with recycled content – and other DuPont materials that could be mass produced in a similar biomorphic way. With these elements the spaces are fluid and human and can communicate an organic, soft, pleasurable domestic environment.

I believe that the design of “Smart-ologic Corian® Living” is a metaphor for how technology, housing, furnishing, and space can work together to evoke an increased sense of experience, affect our psyche and bring us a better living, and also enable us to reduce the environmental imprint of our daily decisions and actions.
