For container gardening ideas, search the internet, the library or a bookstore. The challenge is to come up with a pleasing container garden design. There are an unlimited variety of containers available for your container garden. These range in size from small house-plant pots to large boxes and planters. Equally variable are the materials from which they are made. These include wood, glass, clay, aluminum, bamboo, straw, plastic, fiberglass, terra cotta, tin, cast iron, zinc, copper, and brass, each with certain advantages and disadvantages. What you select will depend on availability, cost, background, and appeal not to mention the characteristics of the gardening pots.

Here are some container gardening ideas. In addition to traditional circular pots and tubs, there are modern and ultra-modern forms—square, rectangular, triangular, hexagonal, and octagonal. Also eligible are old iron kitchen pots, kettles, pails, jugs, casks, vases, crocks, jelly tubs, barrels and nail kegs, Japanese fish tubs, old sinks, bathtubs, bamboo soy tubs. There are novelty containers such as driftwood, wheelbarrows, donkey carts, spinning wheels and boxes attached to roadside mail receptacle. There are also bird cages, decorative well heads, animal figures, and Strawberry jars. Woven baskets may be used to conceal unattractive containers. Even tar paper pots, handled by garden centers and florists, are worthwhile if painted or covered to improve their appearance. Any of these can be used in your container gardening ideas.

Where to find your container supplies? Start with what you have. If you scout cellars or basements, attics, garages, and sheds, you will doubtless encounter something interesting. Old-fashioned pots and kettles, often sold in antique shops at country auctions or seen at old New England inns, have much appeal.

Other container garden ideas are to consider old cookie and bean jars, pickle and other types of crocks, wash tubs, coal pails, jardinières, and ceramic bowls. For drainage, spread a thick layer of large pebbles or broken pieces of pots or bricks at the bottom and then water plants with care. In large containers of this kind, drainage material should be several inches thick. Where rainfall is heavy, be sure to keep garden containers without drainage outlets on porches, under awnings or the broad eaves of houses. With pails and old galvanized wash tubs, holes can be easily punctured at the bottom.

Plants in containers without drainage openings remain moist longer. Some of these—crocks, jardinières and cookie jars—are heavy enough to be secure against wind in outside container gardening.

What constitutes the ideal container for your container garden ideas? A container must be attractive, even if it is not an object of art. It should be strong and durable and able to resist all kinds of weather. This is especially true of the large sizes, which usually remain outdoors all year around. In the North, alternate freezing and thawing is a problem in winter (and could cause cracking); in tropical climates, excessive heat, humidity, and moisture are to be considered (and could cause fading). And in semiarid areas, there is the effect of scorching sun to keep in mind, another cause of fading. All these things must be kept in mind when coming up with your container gardening design.

The ideal container must be large enough to hold a substantial amount of soil. It should have good drainage facilities through holes or other openings at the bottom or sides, though this is not absolutely necessary. It must not rust, at least in a single season, and it should have a wide enough base to rest firmly wherever placed. Besides, it ought to be heavy enough to withstand average winds. In severe storms, like hurricanes and tornadoes, movable containers can be shifted to temporary safety. All of these things should be factored in when you are coming up with your container gardening ideas.

Resistance to rot is another requirement. Wooden containers—except those made of rot-resistant redwood, Western cedar, and Southern red cypress—will need to be treated with a wood preservative. Except for permanent containers, the ability to move your container garden is another feature, and sometimes a safety precaution, of portable container gardening. Large boxes and planters can be fitted with wheels, and garden centers have redwood tubs that rest on platforms with wheels. A hole in the platform corresponds to the hole in the tub. Large containers without wheels can be pushed on iron or wooden rollers by two or more persons; however, if you live in an area prone to disastrous storms it is best to keep your containers small.

Smaller containers are ideal for growing herb container gardens. If you plan to plant an herb container garden be imaginative Here are some container garden ideas for herbs that go well together.

For an Italian selection try Sweet basil, Italian parsley, Oregano, Marjoram and Thyme. For a lovely scented container use Lavender, Rose scented geranium, Lemon balm, Lemon thyme, and Pineapple sage. For really great salads try Garlic chives, Rocket, Salad burnet, Parsley, Celery. And to say “We love French Cooking!” use Tarragon, Chervil, Parsley, Chives and Sage.

Any of these will liven up your cooking and please your family.

So these are just a few container gardening ideas. Get out a pad of paper and make up a container garden design that will please the eye and maybe even the palate

Happy Container Gardening!

Copyright © 2006 Mary Hanna All Rights Reserved.

By: Mary Hanna

About the Author:

The term Medieval Architecture is used to represent various forms of architecture popular in Europe. Castles and fortified walls provide the most notable remaining non-religious examples of medieval architecture. Religion has always had a great influence on architectural styles, as has defense and natural geographical features.

Towers of medieval castles were usually made of stone or sometimes (but rarely) wood. Often toward the later part of the era they included battlements and arrow loops. Materials that were used in the building of castles varied through history. Wood was used for most castles until 1066. They were cheap and were quick to construct. The reason wood fell into disuse as a material is that it is quite flammable. Soon stone became more popular.

The next step is to recognize or examine the building materials used. Most medieval churches were built of limestone, with wood acting as support for flying buttresses. Wood was not a common building material in past ages. You will find gorgeous stained-glass windows. The windows are representative of medieval architecture. You will find extravagant use of colors and size in the medieval churches.

In the 1100′s, people built Romanesque churches in Germany, like the abbey church in Regensburg. Around 1200 AD, people changed from the old Romanesque style to a new Gothic style: first in Italy, with the churches at Florence and Pisa, then in France, with the cathedrals of Laon, of Paris, of Chartres, of Rouen, of Reims, of Amiens, and finally in England with Westminster Abbey, in Germany with Munster, Regensburg, Bremen, Freiburg, and Cologne and in Italy with Milan.

Compare the difference between religious and secular medieval architecture. The emphasis is on defense, as opposed to symbolism. Some of the notable features include a moat (which varied between wet and dry to keep the enemy at bay), wide outer walls (between 20 and 40 feet wide) for the sentries to keep watch, and crenellated edges for the archers to shoot between, which also provided protection.

Well, above are some key features that define the classic and elegant medieval architecture!

By: Nevaeh Adams

About the Author:

Learn how to easily repair your own vehicle with step-by-step instructions using online auto repair advice. Save money and make automotive repairs fast and fun.

Consider professional online auto repair advice when it comes to repairing your own vehicle. You may just avoid a complete disaster. Your vehicle is a big investment and it should be treated as such. When it comes to auto repair two things can happen. You can be successful and fix it right the first time. Or you can make matters worse by creating additional problems. The latter will increase repair costs and down time of the vehicle.

Let me give you a real life example of this. I had a young man e-mail me for help with a no start condition. My first advice to him was to get some online auto repair tips from a quality manual, to properly diagnose the problem. My favorite online auto service manual has the greatest no start diagnostic charts in the business, because they come straight from the factory auto service manuals. Easy to follow tree charts with pictures and helpful tips.

The young man told me he could not afford the $24.95 and he thought replacing the distributor would fix the problem. A new distributor was $650.00.He bought and replaced the distributor but this did not solve the problem. It was also not returnable like most electrical parts. Again I said cut your loses and get any kind of auto service manual and diagnose the problem, do not through parts at it.Well He replaced the coil, cap, rotor, wires and spark plugs. It Still would not start. Now he is a thousand dollars deep in un-needed parts. The guy who could not afford $25. Finally he towed the car to the auto repair shop and they fixed it for about $500.00 by replacing the fuel pump. As a side note I did try to help him by explaining, in a no start condition you either have no fuel or no spark (or rarely no air). The young man explained he was getting plenty of fuel. But he was not.

So $1,850 later he was motoring again. And to let you know step 1 on the diagnostic tree chart was an in-depth procedure with pictures for checking for fuel delivery. Also the online repair manuals had a technical service bulletin on the fuel pump for this specific vehicle. This is why the online auto repair manual can help you. What if you had the same auto repair information that the dealership level mechanic has? But in a format that provides step-by-step instructions and pictures that a person of any skill level can follow. The virtual online auto repair tips system was created to bring top-level information to the do it yourself auto repair public. Quickly find the auto repair information you need fast and simple with the online auto repair manuals handy search function. Just type in the component or area of the vehicle you need assistance with and the online programs gives you with just what you’re hunting for.

By: Mark Gittelman

About the Author:

What Is Your Emotional Intelligence Quotient?

By: www.ayubs.weebly.com

Daniel Goleman, author of the book “Emotional Intelligence,” says, “If your emotional abilities aren’t in hand…you are not going to get very far.”

Your emotional intelligence is measured by your emotional quotient.

EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT

Where IQ measures your general intelligence, emotional quotient measures your level of emotional intelligence. In a sense, it’s an emotional inventory. Emotional quotient is the ability to sense, understand, and effectively apply the power of your emotions to build relationship compatibility. It can show you how to improve performance, personally and professionally. EQ also helps you gain awareness and control of your emotions in the workplace.

If you know your EQ, you can better understand how your emotions affect your choices and decisions. A high EQ can help you improve decision making by using your head, not just your heart.

There are five areas of emotional quotient, which fall under two categories – Intrapersonal and Interpersonal.

INTRAPERSONAL EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT – Self-Awareness, Self-Regulation, and Motivation

Self-Awareness – the ability to recognize and understand your moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others. Take an emotional test by rating yourself in these areas of Self-Awareness:

I rely on my intuition to assist me in my decision-making.

I can name my greatest strengths.

I am usually aware of the way I am feeling.

Self-Regulation – the ability to control or redirect disruptive impulses and moods and the ability to suspend judgment and think before acting. Take an emotional test by rating yourself in these areas of Self-Regulation:

I am calm even in tense situations.

I rarely make impulsive decisions.

I am willing to forego immediate gratification when on a budget.

Motivation – a passion to work for reasons that go beyond money or status, and the ability to pursue goals with energy and persistence. Take an emotional test by rating yourself in these areas of Motivation:

I seek out innovative ways of getting the job done.

I would continue to work if I won the lottery.

When I know what I want, I go after it.

Your Intrapersonal Emotional Quotient is the ability to understand and form an accurate concept of yourself, and be able to use that concept to operate effectively in life.

INTERPERSONAL EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT – Empathy and Social Skills

Empathy – the ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people. Take an emotional test by rating yourself in these areas of Empathy:

I can sense someone’s true feelings based on their body language.

The emotional tone of an interaction is easy to decipher.

I would make a great therapist.

Social Skills – a proficiency in managing relationships and building networks. Take an emotional test by rating yourself in these areas of Social Skills:

I find it easy to establish common ground with somebody I have just met.

I have a wide circle of acquaintances.

I constantly look for opportunities to build relationships.

Your Interpersonal Emotional Quotient is the ability to understand other people and relate effectively to them; to understand what motivates others, how they work, and how to work cooperatively with them. Improving your EQ score is how to improve social skills.

Having a high emotional quotient can help you build strong relationships, reduce stress, and motivate yourself to get what you want.

In business, a high emotional quotient is how to improve performance. It can help you be more productive, improve decision making, and become a superior performer. You will be, as author Glenn Sheppard says, “the employee your company can’t live without.”

Daniel Goleman further says, “When I went on to write my next book, ‘Working with Emotional Intelligence,’ I wanted to make a business case that the best performers were those people strong in these skills.”

By: tatar job

About the Author:

Jeffersonian architectural style was developed by Thomas Jefferson This style was mainly admired during the early American period. The typical features of his designs are the use of octagonal forms, red bricks, use of Chinese railings and the elevation of the main floor which is always above ground level. Jeffersonian architecture is also known as “Palladian” architecture, as it is heavily influenced by the Italian revivalist architect, Andrea Palladio.

Jefferson architecture involves the typical use of the octagon and octagonal forms in his designs. Jefferson employed them as a design motif-halving them, elongating them, and employing them in whole as with the dome of Monticello, or the entire house at Poplar Forest. Jefferson architectural designs are a reflection of his personal preferences and tastes. Jefferson believed that in order to make a building look impressive or magnificent, it was important to learn how to make it so without spending a lot of money.

Even after Jeffersonian designs went out of vogue for other public buildings, they continued to have an influence on many Protestant church designs on the East Coast through the mid-twentieth century. The style is still employed on some southern college campuses, particularly in Virginia, and has enjoyed a certain re-emergence among some newer twenty-first century evangelical church complexes.

Jefferson appears above all as a lover of freedom, whether in politics, in religion, or in research; but the freedom he thus loved from youth was essentially the freedom of reason to reach its logical conclusions, not freedom to degenerate into formless anarchy.

Jefferson’s home, “Monticello” was built with many French and European influences absorbed in it. Palladio’s influences are seen in the orders of the columns and molding as well as the dome of the exterior of the house. Jefferson re-constructed Monticello many times in his life, while making trips back and forth from Europe, each time wanting to try something different that he had been experienced to in France and other countries.

Jeffersonian architecture is famous for its classical and elegant designs. So, read the above article and know more about Jeffersonian architecture.

By: Destiny

About the Author:

Anyone who needs windshield repair wants to get the best price possible on the auto glass services that are needed. However, price is not the only concern. Quality is also very important, and sacrificing quality for price is seldom a good idea.

It might be fine at the time, but it generally comes back later to be not such a good choice. In general, poor quality is best avoided, however cheap the price might be. A glass company that only relies on having the lowest prices in order to get customers might not be the one that a consumer wants to use.

Some companies just have good prices, but this does not mean that they are always the least expensive, and they should not be ruled out simply because they cost a bit more. People really often do get just what they pay for. Where windshield repair is concerned, quality is highly important to avoid water leaking in and to avoid any damage to the car.

An auto glass repair is not the only reason, however, that someone might contact a glass company. These companies also handle many other types of glass services, including window replacement and commercial glass repair.

For commercial glass repair, these companies can deal with everything from small windows all of the way up to the large glass storefronts that are becoming very popular with some stores. Not all stores have these, but those that do know that they can be expensive and difficult to replace.

This is why they are made of such thick glass and they are boarded up when bad storms are coming in areas of the country that are prone to hurricanes and other natural disasters.

Most glass companies also handle what would be considered to be a simple issue, such as a window replacement. Replacing windows can sometimes help a person save a lot on his or her electric or gas heating and cooling bill, because better windows keep a more even temperature within a home and they also protect the occupants from the elements better than very thin windows do.

Because windows do so much, window replacement is important to many consumers. It can be quite expensive, but quality is often worth the price. Getting several estimates in writing and picking the company that provides the best quality for the best price is often the right option for a homeowner.

By: David Warren

About the Author:

I run across people all the time that ask questions about the lye in our handmade soaps. Some come away with a new understanding of soap making, others just turn up their nose.

Lye is essential to the art of soap making. It has been used for literally thousands of years to make various kinds of soap across every continent. Handmade soap has its origins in ancient history.

Although it is believed by many that soap’s history actually began around 2800 B.C. in Babylonia (where historians found a barrel containing a soap-like substance), undeniable proof of soap’s existence was first provided by a Mesopotamian clay tablet dating back to 2200 B.C. with an actual soap recipe inscribed on it. The ancient soap making technique described mixing potash and oils to form a cleansing agent.

It’s almost a given that Egyptians would also make some type of soap or cleanser. Egyptian manuscripts describe a substance created by combining animal fats and vegetable oils to create a soap-like base. The documents from approximately 1500 B.C. go on to explain another type of soap that is used in the production of wool.

Around 200 A.D. the ancient Greeks were said to have used an ash mixture to clean their statues and pots. The Gauls and Romans also made soap with animal fat, beech tree ashes and Goat’s Milk. The goat’s milk seems to have been their favorite, and I can understand why! They made both hard and soft soap products.

Today, soap is made from vegetable or animal fats and an alkali. In the past however, people made their own soap from animal tallow and wood ashes. Regardless of who first created the concoction, it was undoubtedly used in Rome. This is an established fact because a soapmaker’s shop was discovered within the rubble of Pompeii after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The Romans often used soap as a cosmetic. It was quite popular with the ladies, for they used it to dye their hair red. Plant extracts were probably used to acquire this color.

By 600 A.D. soap making guilds were formed and the modern formula for the soap that we use today was created.

The Hebrews used a salt base when creating their cleanser. This salt, used in a similar manner by many ancient cultures, could be found quite easily in their local lakes. They used the salt to create the alkali called for in the recipes.

By the eighth century, it is documented that there were soap factories in Italy and Spain. It was not until the twelfth or thirteenth century that this industry was embraced by France. France then passed on the tradition to England. The French made their soaps almost exclusively from olive oil, while the English delved into many different kinds of soap.

The Industrial Revolution forever changed the commercial production of soap. People stopped making it at home and started buying it from a catalog or store. Although, poor people did still make their own soap from wood ash and animal fats.

Today, lye is a product on the “hit list” because it is used in methanphetamine production. You can’t just buy it at the store like we did 30 years ago. It must be ordered or bought from a supplier with plenty of paperwork to go along with it! But, it’s still possible to make your own inexpensive and all-natural soap at home. You can make it from scratch with lye and soybean, coconut or olive oils, or you can order a rebatching base from a reputable supplier.

Either way, natural glyercin soaps are the way to go! Commercial soaps are more detergent than moisturizer these days. Vegan or at the very least, all natural, ingredients are best. Make your own soap or buy from soap-makers like me — and be kind to your skin!

http://www.NeeNeesSoapShop2.blogspot.com

By: Renee Vailes

About the Author:

Most rental agreements have a section regarding the renter breaking the lease agreement. While there is also likely a section or several sections regarding when the leasing agent can evict the renter, the section on breaking the lease should be of particular interest to those who might be in a position to have to break the lease some day. Renters should understand these contract terms so they can make an informed decision. Additionally the renter should consider all costs associated with breaking the lease. This includes both financial costs as well as emotional costs.

Understand the Contract Terms

Renters should review their rental agreement carefully before signing this document. The rental agreement is a legally binding document which should be given proper consideration before entering into the agreement. This is important because understanding these terms will be essential if the need to break the lease becomes a reality.

Rental agreements typically do allow the renter to break the lease but not without some form of penalty. This penalty usually comes in the form of requiring the renter to give a specified amount of notice before the contract is up and also requires the renter to pay a sum of money to break the rental agreement. A notice of 30 days and a lease break amount equal to one month’s rent are common penalties associated with breaking a lease, however, individual leasing agents may impose penalties which are either harsher or less severe.

Consider the Costs of Breaking the Lease

As previously mentioned there is typically a fee associated with breaking a lease. This fee is often set equal to one month’s rent. While paying this fee may seem excessive there are some instances in which it is an economically good decision to break the contract even though there is a financial penalty imposed.

Consider the example of a homeowner who is the process or relocating due to a job change. The homeowner may opt to rent an apartment in the new state while the house is put up for sale in the previous state. If the renter enters into a 12 month contract under the supposition that it will take this long to sell the old house and purchase a new house, he may be surprised if his other house sells quickly and he finds a home in his new state rather quickly. This may all occur within a matter of 2-3 months.

The renter has the option to stay in the apartment until the rental agreement nears expiration and then start looking for a home. However, this option runs the risk that the home he previously found will not likely be available. The renters other option is to place a bid on the new house and plan on breaking the lease if he is able to close on the new house. In this case, the renter would be saddled with both a rent and a mortgage for 9-10 months. This will likely be significantly more expensive than the price the renter would pay to break the lease.

Breaking the Lease is Not Always a Financial Decision

The decision to break a lease is not always completely a financial decision. There are sometimes emotional components which factor into the equation. For example a renter may have only 1-2 months remaining on his rental agreement when he is offered a dream job which will require him to relocate immediately. Although breaking the lease that late in the agreement is usually not financially wise, the renter may make this decision to avoid missing out on a dream job.

By: David Riewe

About the Author:
